lp. new international. nir187 released 1987( vinyl only )

the self named lp marked the end of the first incarnation of bourbonese qualk. julian gilbert left the group after 'the spike'(1986) to concentrate on writing and theatre leaving tanza and crab who parted ways after recording this album and touring in germany/holland. tanza went on to found 'the state' and the 'sound sound' record label while crab continued as bourbonese qualk, dissolved the recloose organisation label and founded 'new international' as the outlet for future releases.

creating art is a dirty job, but someone's got to do it. when your talking to simon crab you are talking about heavy duty industrial art funk ramble, you are talking post nuclear rhythmic horror.....sound terrorism, to be precise you are talking bourbonese qualk and that is weird. since the departure of steven tanza qualk are a solo act allowing simon more time to get off on his tower block obsession. his rooms are crammed with drawing, diagrams and photographs, street plans adorn the walls and the current albums features a still from a tower block video and simon claims to have scaled most of the blocks in south london..its what you call an obsession.

if we were awarding prizes for making people rush out of the room in blind panic bourbonese qualk would have a trophy cabinet to match bayern munich's. strange, because whilst some of their music is damned uncomfortable listening, an equal part is pleasantly ambient. pretty, even. their 6th album is no exception with different types of track side by side throughout, so that the listener can neither drift along in a state of slumber nor masochistically subject themselves to the audio equivalent of the chinese water torture. this makes it all a very stop-start thing but all the more rewarding as a result. file under, er, bourbonese qualk
